GHEE AND AYURVEDHA
The Golden oil known as ghee which is also known as ghrita in Sanskrit, the traditional language of the ancient texts of Ayurveda. The Brihat threya, the three most important Ayurvedic texts are the CharakaSamhita, the ShushrutaSamhita and the AshtangaHrdayam which date back as far as 500BC in written form.
Cow Ghee is known to be digested 96% which is highest as compared to all other vegetable or animal source fats. It contains antioxidants like Vitamin E and beta carotene besides other nutrients like phospholipids, and triglycerides. Cow Ghee is regularly used in formulations in Ayurveda especially for chronic and degenerative ailments. It is either used as a part of a formulation as a nourishing, extracting, assimilating and/or absorbing agent.
Cow Ghee, an integral part of the Ayurvedic health science is considered a premier Rasayana. A food that helps maintains good health, vitality and longevity. Cow's Ghee is excellent for balancing Vata (air) and Pitta (fire) related doshas (bio-energy center). It is satvic (healthy) food, which has a pure influence on mind, body and spirit. Vata type people can enjoy more ghee than Pitta (fire) type who in turn can enjoy more ghee than Kapha (Water) types.
It is ancient Ayurvedic assumption that as Cow's ghee becomes aged, its taste becomes slightly bitter its effectiveness and healing properties increases. In many Ayurvedic classical formulation 5 to 10 years old Cow's ghee is highly recommended.
Rishi Shushrutha explains about cow’s ghee in his sushurutha samhitha in Sanskrit as follows.
“Ghrita is sweet, mild in action, soft, cold in potency (Virya), not increasing moisture in the tissues, lubricating, relieves upward movement in the alimentary tract, insanity, epilepsy, colic, fever, and distension of the abdomen, mitigates vata and pitta, kindles agni, increases memory, wisdom, intelligence, complexion, voice, beauty, softness of the body, vitality, vigor, strength, and span of life; is aphrodisiac, good for vision, increases kapha, wards off sins and inauspiciousness, destroys poisons and demons.”
